Graduate Student Internship Opportunities

I am working with a medical device company that has several projects in the biomedical engineering arena in need of post-graduate interns (Drexel students requested). The company intends to offer full time employment to the interns, assuming all goes well during the internship period. The pay is between $20 and $30 per hour for these projects. 1. Assistant Research Scientist, Dual Energy Acquisition/Reconstruction Project: XXX Company manufactures Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) imaging systems for body extremities (feet, hand/elbow, knee). The 3D volumetric data is reconstructed from plain x-ray projections of the target anatomy acquired through a 360-degree scan orbit. We intend to expand the range of captured and reconstructed tissue densities by employing dual x-ray energies. XXX is seeking an intern who will work directly under the supervision of the Chief Technology Officer, who is also the President & CEO, and with the internal senior software developers, in addition to an external consulting scientist and externally licensed software developers. The ideal candidate would have experience with advanced mathematical algorithms, as well as with Microsoft Visual Studio C++/C# and C. The ideal candidate will also have completed graduate studies, preferably with a concentration in computer science or electrical engineering.

Approximately 30 hours per week/ $25 – $30 an hour

Result Expected – Implementation of a functional dual-energy volumetric reconstruction algorithm (in conjunction with externally developed components).

Current State – Not started.

Gap to be Filled – Visualization of range of tissue densities, especially in the soft tissue domain, that is not achievable currently.

Timeframe – 12 months

Implementation Steps – Specific projects will be assigned by CEO. The exact x-ray energy spectrum to match the target anatomy will have to be experimentally determined on a test bench, followed by full 3-D capture. Dual-energy 3D reconstruction will be coordinated with external resources.

Resources Needed – Computer equipped with programming software and access to XXX lab equipment and production networks (All resources will be provided.)

2. DICOM/ Modality Worklist Project

XXX Company manufactures X-ray imaging systems (PedCAT), which obtain anatomical medical data through cone beam computed tomography. XXX is seeking an intern to work directly with a Senior Software Engineer to create a program that simulate a DICOM modality worklist server(MWL) as input to our products during testing. The program will run on a standalone PC or virtual machine. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of communication and networking protocols, especially applications over TCP, as well as programming in Windows or other GUI level interfaces. Knowledge of DICOM communication protocols is a plus. The ideal candidate would have completed graduate studies in engineering, preferably biomedical engineering.

Approximately 30 hours per week/ $20 – $25 an hour

Result Expected – Working MWL server to be used during official verification test process.

Current State – Not started.

Gap to be Filled –Currently there is no MWL server test procedure.

Timeframe – Expected to take approx. 6 months, depending on candidate.

Implementation Steps – MWL server will be incorporated into the main testing cycle as soon as it is available.

3. Assistant Software Engineer

XXX Company manufactures X-ray imaging systems (PedCAT), which obtain anatomical medical data through cone beam computed tomography. The data is interpreted through XXX’s custom visualization software. XXX is seeking an intern who will work directly with a Senior Software Engineer on various development and improvement projects, including the development of XXX Product, a simplified version designed for file viewing by third party users. The team works with several target platforms, and so the ideal candidate would have experience working with one or more of the following: Microsoft Visual Studio C++/C#, C, LabView. The ideal candidate will have completed graduate studies, preferably with a concentration in computer science or electrical engineering.

Approximately 30 hours per week/ $20 – $25 an hour

Result Expected – Improvement in the function and performance of PedCAT software

Current State – Most requirements have been established for XXX Product. Other projects include adding features to existing product software, and utility programs to be used in production.

Gap to be Filled – Develop a standalone limited functionality DICOM viewer that can be packaged with patient scans for delivery from patient to physician.

Timeframe – 3 months

Implementation Steps – Specific projects will be assigned. All changes will be reviewed by the testing & validation teams before exiting beta version.

4. Image Quality Assessment Project

XXX Company manufactures X-ray imaging systems (PedCAT), which obtain anatomical medical data through cone beam computed tomography. XXX is seeking an intern to work directly with a Senior Software Engineer on an image quality assessment project. The objective would be to determine what the optimum parameters are for best image quality of a scan through image analysis, based on available parameters. Expertise required includes image quality analysis techniques. Programming is not necessarily a pre-requisite, but any exposure to LabView or ImageJ would be a plus. The ideal candidate will have completed PhD studies.

Approximately 30 hours per week/ $20 – $25 an hour

Result Expected – Determine ideal protocol parameters for identifying disorders of the foot.

Current State –Current product has limitations regarding firing sequence. New power supply mechanism in place to provide additional firing control. No investigation has begun.

Gap to be Filled – Improved image quality protocols.

Timeframe – Expected to last approx. 6 months.

Implementation Steps – Any new protocols will require official regulatory approvals and associated data collection before deploying to the product.

    I would like to know if you will be accepting students with MS in Biomedical Engineering for the project of image quality assessment. I have some experience in image analysis in MATLAB and I have also worked with digital x-rays during my internship in a hospital.
